Cooling Hints
| Now that the hot weather is
with us, we will all be watching our temperature gauges very carefully. When I was working
at European Sports Cars I learned one trick that worked quite well with a hot running MG.
We used to put in wide mouthed 160 degree thermostats to increase water flow from the
engine. Also make sure that you have the right temperature sending unit that matches the
year MG that you have, (electric gauges only - ED) they are colour coded to give different
readings for different model years. Last but not least, I had one MGB that had a high
reading gauge, but everything was OK with the cooling system. The problem was in the
voltage stabilizer unit that controls the gauges, it had gone bad causing a false reading
on the temp gauge. The stabilizer unit is located inside the car on the drivers
side, behind the instruments. It has 4 prongs, 2 male and 2 female, and has 3 green wires
attached. Paul Lewis |
